Forerunner
A collaboration with Tanad Williams in the Mermaid Arts Centre, Wicklow.
We developed a modular timber building system based on the designs of Ken Isaacs’ living structures from the 1970s. The wooden members are of varying lengths based on the dimensions of a 2440mm x 1220mm plywood sheet. The structures are bolted together allowing the structures to be rebuilt to fit other spaces or purposes. Other materials have been introduced like canvas panels and carpet to navigate the user and to suggest functions. We also replaced all the glass panels in the gallery with plywood and put tinted gels on the windows to give the gallery a more domestic feel. We blocked off an expansive glass wall with a partition wall and cut a small arched window in it.
